We moved into a new house at the beginning of this year and it has been a slow process of getting situated. The house was painted right before we moved in and since the paint was new, although not our choice, we decided painting would be something we left for next year. This house is unlike any other house we have lived in, not only is it bigger but it is a split level with a very open floor plan, before we had separate rooms so each one could be decorated without considering the other, now they all flow together which has made decorating more of a challenge.

There is one wall in particular in my house that has really plagued me as to how to decorate it. This wall is in the eating area within the kitchen it is above the stairway to the lower level and visible as soon as you walk in the door. After lots and lots of browsing on Gallery Direct with no idea what we were looking for we came back to one of our favorite artists of whom we already have two pieces, Laura Gunn. We knew we needed more than one piece to fill the space and decided we really loved Dogwood on Green, Dogwood on Red and Dogwood on Orange. I am a huge fan of decorating with a series and the tall narrow design of these is perfect plus the three different colors go together and work with the colors in my whole house. We decided having the art printed on birchwood would give it extra character and texture.

The pieces arrived and were even better than we imagined and looked absolutely amazing on the wall. We knew the Gallery Direct custom art pieces would all go over the stairs but that left the other part of the wall empty and in need of some decor. I love clocks and have one in every room but this one, we decided the large clock that is in our living room looked perfect on this empty wall so we brought that into the space, now all we were missing was window treatments for the sliding glass door. Finding curtains proved much harder than I expected I wanted something bold but not patterned to compete with the Laura Gunn artwork. I finally found the perfect curtains at Target of all places and got a great deal on a rod from T J Maxx.

Once the curtains went up I knew it was exactly what I wanted. The room feels so much cozier and brighter now which is perfect as we go into the dreary winter months. When you walk in my door the curtains draw you in and go well with the Laura Gunn in the hallway and the vase of flowers I had from Pier 1 matches too, it all ties together perfectly and I couldn’t be happier. It all started with inspiration from my Gallery Direct art!

So what do you think of my kitchen makeover with Gallery Direct and my custom art pieces from Laura Gunn? I love that I have totally different pieces of art by the same artist, the series is on birchwood and the piece in the hallway Poppies on Blue I is on acrylic yet it all flows perfectly without being boring and too matchy matchy.

Love the colors! Looks great!
Ellen, amazing choice! I think they’re perfect for that space. May I suggest trying them a little closer together? Try moving the outer two closer to the one in the middle. It’s an old rule of design. I think they may make an even bigger impact…
looks great!
