Homemade French Bread Recipe
- 2 TBS active dry yeast
- 2 cups warm water
- 2 tsp salt ( I prefer natural sea salt)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 5 – 5 1/2 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in water in a large mixing bowl. Add the salt and sugar and stir to dissolve. Add in 2 cups flour and beat until smooth in a mixer. Keep adding flour until a soft dough forms, I like to add it carefully while the mixer is going on low. Flour a large cutting board or other flat surface and knead dough on surface for about 5 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl and turn once to grease both sides of dough. Cover bowl with a towel and let rise for an hour in a warm place (dough is ready when it doubles in size).
When dough has doubled punch down the middle then turn out onto floured surface. Divide dough in half and make 2 loaf like shapes. Place on a greased baking sheet, cover with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes until doubled in size. Then make 3-4 diagonal slits in the surface of the bread. Cook for 15-20 minutes in a 450 degree oven. Slice and serve with Land O Lakes® Butter with Canola Oil.

Thanks for the bread recipe!! It looks AMAZING!
Does the Land ‘O Lakes Butter with Canola Oil have soy in it??
It does not list soy only canola oil. sweet cream and salt so my tentative answer is no… they do make a 3 ingredient olive oil spread too which is olive oil, sweet cream and salt.
Thanks! Colin has a soy allergy, so I am pretty careful! I’ll look the next time I’m at the store!!
it only says milk not soy….
Looks delish! I am a sucker for warm bread!
I love warm bread too!
YUM! That bread looks delicious.
Thanks it is so easy the kids love helping!
I love that it has no artificial flavors – no corn syrup!
Me too Erin!
I find that this sentence “This year I am realizing my limits and seeking to simplify my life and that includes the task to simplify my kitchen” and homemade French bread should not be together! I would purchase the loaf at the store!
But the recipe is simple. It’s not the cooking but the cleaning of blades and dishes and countertops that I don’t enjoy.
True Olivia the cleaning can be brutal but I do this with my kids so its fun for all!
We make all our bread as well and it’s so worth it! You might want to look into canola oil a bit though. My family has decided it’s not healthy for us. Don’t waste the crumbs is a good blog with lots of interesting food facts, meal planning ideas and recipes that you might enjoy. I’m with Olivia-it’s the clean up that makes me wish I had a housekeeper. Mostly not,but some days I wish I had an Alice only I wouldn’t have her cook-only clean
.
I need a cleaning lady big time, thanks for the tip on the cooking blog I will check it out.
It seems so simple, yet it looks so tasty.
It is so simple and very, very good!
