How to Become a Work at Home Mom

The following is a guest post from Kim at Work At Home Mafia.

Are you tired of working in a cubicle and spending most of day commuting?  Would you rather be at home working and spending more time with your family?
Then working from home may be the answer to your problem.  But what I have found over the years is that most people have no idea where to start when they want to change careers or find at home employment in their chosen field.
That is what started me on my path.  I spent years bouncing in and out of office and management jobs only to return to working from home for the financial, family and health benefits.  But I knew others had questions so I started my site, Work At Home Mafia, after realizing I enjoyed helping others.
I broke out the basics in an ebook that is free to view or download but I realized that knowing what type of job would suit you is one of the hardest parts of the quest.  There really are three basics types of positions that are vastly different from one another,
1. Customer Service/Tech Support – If you have a pleasant speaking voice, a quiet work environment and high speed internet access then this could be the type of position that you could excel in.  Companies that employ individuals to work from home include Embarq, American Express, GE, Home Shopping Network and QVC, just to name a few.
2. Non Phone Positions – These are the most highly sought after positions around, especially if you have small children.  No worries about background noises and the normal chatter of your household.   They vary from work that includes accounting, data entry, research, expert answers to graphics design.
3. Writing/Editing – Do love to tell stories? Can you communicate well via writing?  Then writing may the ticket for you.  Companies are eager to find individuals who want to write content, sales messaging and even greeting cards.  If you are smart and know your worth, you can really make it as a writer if you have great skills.
Once you know what you are suited for then it will make your search that much easier.  And if you have any questions, please let me know.  I love to help moms stay and home and still earn an income.

Guest Post by Organize With Sandy

Today’s guest post is from Sandy of Organize with Sandy. From now on I will feature a blogger with a guest post on Saturday’s. If you would like to be featured email me.

So you have decided to follow Thrifty & Chic Mom’s advice and use coupons to save your family valuable money. I have also decided to do so. But there is a process that you need to under go in order to make it work for you.

According to what Thrifty Chic Mom told me, you need to buy the great sale items when they are on a great sale. Even if you do not need them at that moment. So you have to “stock pile” some items. You have to understand that from a professional organizers point of view this is just the opposite of what we try to accomplish. We don’t like to hear the word “stock pile” or “back ups”. But guess what? There are always exceptions to the rule. Our economy is in trouble, people are losing jobs and money is tight for all of us. So necessity is at hand here. So the question is now, where do you put it, the extra food.

First things first, you need to clean out the cupboards in order to make some extra room.
Take one cupboard at a time and set a timer for 15 minutes. Go quickly through it and ask yourself if you have used that empty jelly jar that you lost the lid to, or that plastic cup that got melted in the dishwasher? If you have not used something in the last year…get rid of it. If it is something that someone else can use, put it in a box or a white trash bag. If it is trash, put it in a black trash bag (so you don’t throw away donate items accidentally). Empty the cupboards (one at a time) and then clean them off. Do not forget that you can adjust most kitchen cupboard shelves. Make them work for you not against you.

You will find that you will end up with some extra storage room that you may be able to use for food. You can use door hangers inside pantry doors for cans, hanging additions to shelves and many other items made to increase your space. You can find such items at Target, The Container Store and Online Organizing (and scrolling down to Maximizing Cabinet and Pantry Space), along with many other stores. Don’t forget that you can make some of your own space savers for free (an old shoebox instead of a basket etc..) be creative..you don’t have to buy new. Adjusting the shelves can be all you need.Use a shelf in the basement or garage if you need more space. Be sure if you store items in these places that they are either bug proof items (cans or glass jars) or that you have them safe in plastic tubs or storage containers. I prefer if it is something that you need to purchase, you get clear. Target is always running good deals on these.

Also go through your food, if it is something that is expired (and you will find some) throw it out. If it is something that is still good, but you know you will never use it, donate it.
Just going through your cupboards and pantry and organizing them, you will realize you have more space than you realize.

Guest Post: Waste Less

Julie at Living on Less has a great series called Waste Less Wednesday. Today she has kindly summarized her ideas in a guest post, enjoy and be sure to check out her series every Wednesday.

Waste Less Wednesday in Review

Each week I take one common household item and find a way to reuse it. Part of the reason I began doing this was to be more green, but part was to be more frugal. I believe both can easily go hand in hand. Here are a few categories where you can reuse items in order to waste less:

Food: Take leftover pizza sauce and mix it with pasta and your favorite pizza toppings for pizza pasta. You can also toast stale bread to make bread crumbs or croutons. Freeze bananas to use in smoothies, banana bread, or your favorite banana recipe.

Crafts: Use junk mail and used paper for coloring on instead of coloring books. My son loves to color on blank paper so I save paper from my office and let him use it when he wants to color. Another great craft is to take toilet paper tubes, put a little trinket inside, wrap several times with colored tissue paper, and tie the ends. This makes a great party favor or gift. Are broken crayons taking over your house? Take the paper off and melt them in muffin tins for cupcake crayons.

Household items: Plastic grocery sacks seem to take over my house but many flea markets are happy to have them. They also make a great cover for the paint pan when painting. Clean up is a breeze, simply take off the bag and throw it away. Paper towel tubes make great spy gear (think scopes) and two paper towel tubes glued or taped together make for a fun pair of binoculars.

Take a look around your house and see what you can reuse in order to waste less, help our environment, and save a little money. The possibilities are endless!
