How to Become a Work at Home Mom

March 10, 2010 by Ellen

The following is a guest post from Kim at Work At Home Mafia.

Are you tired of working in a cubicle and spending most of day commuting?  Would you rather be at home working and spending more time with your family?
Then working from home may be the answer to your problem.  But what I have found over the years is that most people have no idea where to start when they want to change careers or find at home employment in their chosen field.
That is what started me on my path.  I spent years bouncing in and out of office and management jobs only to return to working from home for the financial, family and health benefits.  But I knew others had questions so I started my site, Work At Home Mafia, after realizing I enjoyed helping others.
I broke out the basics in an ebook that is free to view or download but I realized that knowing what type of job would suit you is one of the hardest parts of the quest.  There really are three basics types of positions that are vastly different from one another,
1. Customer Service/Tech Support – If you have a pleasant speaking voice, a quiet work environment and high speed internet access then this could be the type of position that you could excel in.  Companies that employ individuals to work from home include Embarq, American Express, GE, Home Shopping Network and QVC, just to name a few.
2. Non Phone Positions – These are the most highly sought after positions around, especially if you have small children.  No worries about background noises and the normal chatter of your household.   They vary from work that includes accounting, data entry, research, expert answers to graphics design.
3. Writing/Editing – Do love to tell stories? Can you communicate well via writing?  Then writing may the ticket for you.  Companies are eager to find individuals who want to write content, sales messaging and even greeting cards.  If you are smart and know your worth, you can really make it as a writer if you have great skills.
Once you know what you are suited for then it will make your search that much easier.  And if you have any questions, please let me know.  I love to help moms stay and home and still earn an income.

Better Baby Bums Eco-friendly Baby Stuff Giveaway

March 6, 2010 by Ellen

I have often wanted to use more eco-friendly diapers but never really found any I liked. Recently I tried out two eco-friendly diapers from Better Baby Bums with the Ballerina and I truly loved them both. I got try the Bambo Nature Eco-friendly diaper and the Broody Chick 100% Natural and Fully Compostable diapers. I worried that these diapers might not be as absorbent since they are fully decomposable but this was definitely not the case. The Ballerina is 2 years old so absorbency and fit are important with her. She is getting close to being ready to potty train and holds it in to go all at once which means leaky diaper won’t cut it. The fit and absorbency levels of both of these diapers exceeded my expectations which made me very happy. Both of these diapers are dye and chlorine free which I really love since my daughter has eczema. Her sensitive skin had no problem with these diapers and they were surprisingly soft. While I favored the Broody Chick diapers the Ballerina preferred the Bambo Nature only because they had bunnies on them, but really both were fabulous. Want to order some of these diapers for yourself? Better Baby Bums is offering at 20% discount with promo code greenbum. Plus they offer free shipping with orders over $50 and a free water bottle! Better yet  I have a $50 GC to giveaway to one lucky reader. To enter tell me what other product at Better Baby Bums caught your eye.

Slob Proof! Real-Life Decorating Solutions (Giveaway)

March 6, 2010 by Ellen

Do you ever feel like your decor is always being ruined? We try to have a kid friendly house but sometimes I fell like that means sacrificing decor in general, as in just don’t have it. Designer and author Debbie Wiener wrote a fantastic book Slob Proof! Real-Life Home Decorating Solutions that helps even the most design impaired decorate. As I was reading the book I was constantly amazed at how such little things make such big differences. For example she talks about the number of cushions on a couch and the overall design and how it makes it easier or harder to care for. I never thought of that. When we bought our couch my husband and I went on looks and comfort as in, is it pretty and do we like sitting on it. Debbie Weiner has also come out with a great line of furniture that is truly  slob proof. The furniture is made of a fabric called Crypton that has a moisture barrier making it truly spill and stain proof! On her site Designing Solutions Debbie Weiner offers an array of advice and she will even help you try to solve your design dilemmas via email if you submit a picture to her. In the future when I can re-do my rooms I will definitely use this book as I make my furniture and design choices. I have a copy of the book Slob Proof! Real-Life Decorating Solutions by Debbie Weiner to give to one lucky reader. To enter tell me what room in your house is your biggest designing dilemma.
